How To Tweak Your Rehearsal in 20 Minutes

I’m always tweaking things. I tweak my phone, my computer, my office, and even my house.

I’ll work at something until it fits, works, or just looks right. As a guitarist, I’m never satsified with my tone, my action, or my ability. I’m always tweaking things to try and get better, smoother, or faster.

We Can Always Get Better

There are great similiraties in the realities of life and the journey that every single soul is on with the journey of faith. We are constantly being pressured, challenged, and changed.

As a worship pastor, I’m always looking at ways to tweak my team. To find better and more effecient ways to communicate and practice. Stepping up my leadership is one major factor and if you are looking for some books to get started, I’d suggest these.

But even more so than reading a few books and blog posts, I’d like to offer something my team and I have been doing a bit differently that has already made a big difference.

Ten Books Every Worship Leader Should Have

So you’ve been thrown into leading worship… great! Now what?

If you are anything at all like me, someone who loves the church and loves music, yet feels a bit overwhelmed at where to start when leading a ministry and a team, I’d like to suggest a few books to help get you started.

These books are not the standard. They are not an exhaustive list. They are however a great place to start and I believe give a well rounded grasp of a few important areas for self preparation, leadership, and worship.

The Art of Raising Our Hands in Worship

I’m starting this series off with the most obvious expression of worship… the raising (or lifting) of our hands.

I know it may not seem like much, but this somewhat simple gesture, is a wonderful expression of surrender.

Think about it. What happens when an enemy force finally gives into the more powerful army? They raise their hands in surrender. Meaning, they give up and submit themselves to the stronger or higher authority.

We Suck at Surrender

Let’s be honest for a minute… this is something we really struggle with isn’t it? We will fight and wrestle with God in a myriad of ways each and every day holding onto our pride and egos. We’re a self reliant bunch that is bound and determined to find our way on our own.

The Practice of Personal, Private Worship Before Public Worship

There is a battled being played out every Sunday morning in North America.

The war isn’t necessarily between the invisible forces of this world, although it certainly happens. The fight isn’t even between our biggest enemies or adversaries.

The battle we face is internal. It’s a struggle between performance based worship vs. authentic heart-felt worship.

Between going through the motions and mechanics of worship vs. being lead in spirit and truth.

I was recently challenged by chapter seven of Matt Redman’s book The Unquenchable Worshipper called The Unnoticed Worshipper. As I read through it, asked questions, and then proceeded to be honest with myself, I felt the tension.

The tension between wanting to honestly and authentically worship God and lead his church in worship and the internal struggle I face with my own pride. The fight between glorifying the unseen and glorifying the seen.

And although we must confront this pride and need for attention head on, it’s really only a sympton of what’s really happening beneath. Or rather, what’s not happening beneath… personal worship.

My Biggest Struggle with Ministry and Marriage #marriageministry

I’m going to be honest… being married and in ministry is not easy. In fact it’s one of the hardest thing’s I have ever had to do.

Marriage on it’s own isn’t a walk in the park. It takes constant communication, compassion, understanding, time, and grace. I don’t believe I’ll ever reach the summit of the married life but I’ll continue to walk, climb, and rest in all of it’s complexities and joys.

I believe that it is the greatest example of Christ’s love for the church. It’s the imagery Paul uses in his epistles to describe the relationship between Christ and his people. Jesus himself often alluded to it and shared stories about it. Christ even performed his first miracle at a wedding.

So it’s clear to see that God places a high value on this intimate relationship. It is to be cherished and valued above all human relationships.

One Key Ingredient to Building Strong Teams

What are you doing to build into the relationships of the people you serve and lead?

If all you are doing is giving them pats on the backs during meetings or rehearsals, you’re really only doing the bare minimum.

We build our ministries and teams on the backs of our volunteers and if all we do is pay them lip service, we run the risk of an unhealthy team.

Everyone Needs Encouragement

Let’s be honest, we all like to be encouraged. We all like words of affirmation, atta-boys, and the good jobs. It makes us feel good. It helps validate why were doing what were doing. And many times, it can be the recharge we need to keep going.

But it’s more than words. Sometimes it’s gifts, books, music, and even an occasional card. How awesome is it to get a card or book out of the blue? To know that someone is thinking about you and wanting to invest into your life?

Get Off Your Butt and Get Creative

Today is the first day of February.

The month we celebrate black history. The month we get to overspend on flowers, chocolate, and show our spouses or significant others how much we love them.

It’s month two of 2012. It’s still got that ‘new car’ smell. Our hopes, visions, and dreams we started last month can quickly be forgotten and lose their steam.

We have wide eyes and our hearts are filled with hope. God can do amazing things this year. Now.

But what are you going to do about it? Will you get creative and join the mission.

Or will you let your doubts and fears remove all ambition. Will your doubts and fears destroy your ideas and creative juices?

Don’t. Let. This. Happen.
